Music in practice

This is a collection of projects, ideas, and everyday practices from my music classroom. Here, I share experiences that explore music, creativity, inquiry, and student agency, with the hope of inspiring other educators to bring more music, curiosity, and meaningful learning into their own classrooms.

My Story

Every educator has a story, and mine has been shaped by music, curiosity, creativity, and a passion for learning.

For over 17 years, I have been exploring how music can become a meaningful part of children’s learning experiences. My journey has taken me through different classrooms, cultures, and educational contexts, always with the belief that music can help children express themselves, connect with others, explore ideas, and make sense of the world around them.

This website is a reflection of that journey. It brings together the experiences, projects, ideas, and everyday practices that have shaped me as a music educator and musician. It is also a space to share what I have learned along the way and to inspire other educators to explore the possibilities of music, creativity, and meaningful learning in their own classrooms.

This is my story, and a little of the story behind the work I love to do.

Classroom routines

The Power of Routine in the Music Classroom.

A predictable routine creates a sense of security, belonging, and readiness to learn, especially in Early Childhood.

In my music classroom, every lesson has a structure: arrival, circle song, warm-up, activity of the day, clean-up, and goodbye. These simple routines help children understand what comes next, participate with confidence, and make meaningful connections through music.

Who We are - Music & Identity

As part of our PYP Who We Are unit, students are exploring how our musical tastes and preferences are shaped by who we are, our families, cultures, and experiences. Each class is made up of unique individuals, so every playlist tells a different story. By listening to the music chosen by their friends, students develop musical appreciation, discover different styles and sounds from around the world, and learn to value the diverse musical identities within their community.

To bring this exploration to life, I created a QR-code playlist for each class, featuring the musical choices of its students. We first created a playlist with songs chosen by the adults in our school community, from teachers and assistants to security, maintenance, cleaning staff, and administrators. After learning how to use their school tablets to scan the QR codes, students went on an inquiry walk around the school, visiting different classrooms and discovering the unique musical preferences of each group.
